Get on the mesh.

From unboxing to your first transmitted message — everything you need to join the Central Valley Mesh.

1

Choose your hardware

Any Meshtastic-compatible device works on the 915 MHz US ISM band. For a first node we recommend the LILYGO T-Beam Supreme or Heltec WiFi LoRa 32 V3 — both are $25–45 and well-supported.

2

Flash Meshtastic firmware

Use the Meshtastic Web Flasher — no software to install, works in Chrome or Edge. Plug in via USB, select your device, and click Flash.

Don't see your device? Try a different USB cable — many cables are charge-only. The flasher needs a data cable.
3

Set region and modem preset

Open the Meshtastic app or Web Client and go to Radio Config → LoRa:

RegionUS (915 MHz)
Modem PresetLongFast
Hop Limit3 (default)
Use LongFast or MediumFast. Most CVM nodes run LongFast. MediumFast is used in some areas. Using a completely different preset (LongSlow, ShortFast) means you won't hear anyone. Ask in Discord if you're not sure what your local nodes use.
4

Set your device role

Go to Radio Config → Device:

Handheld / portable / homeCLIENT
Hilltop / tower infrastructureROUTER
Silent remote repeaterREPEATER
Sensor (no rebroadcast)CLIENT_MUTE

When in doubt, use CLIENT. Ask in Discord if you need help choosing.

5

Enable "OK to MQTT"

In Radio Config → LoRa, enable OK to MQTT. This lets gateway nodes upload your packets to the CVM MeshInfo server so you appear on the live map and stats. Fully optional — doesn't affect radio behavior.

6

Optional: MQTT uplink

If you have WiFi and want your node to directly feed CVM stats, configure Module Config → MQTT:

MQTT Addressmqtt.cvme.sh
Usernamecvmesh
Passwordlarge4dogs
Root Topicmsh/US/CA/centralvalley
EncryptionEnabled
TLSDisabled

Or use the Config Wizard to generate exact CLI commands.

7

Get outside and transmit

Power on and step outside or near a window — 915 MHz doesn't penetrate walls well. If you're in range of any network node it will appear in your node list automatically.

Check the live map, then join our Discord and say hello in #general.
